Founded in 2019 by designer Daisuke Maki, ULTERIOR is guided by a distinctly Japanese sense of beauty — one that values restraint, subtle imbalance, and the expressive potential of space. Drawing from workwear and military garments across different eras and cultures, the brand approaches clothing through the lens of material first. Collaborating with textile mills throughout Japan, ULTERIOR develops original fabrics that emphasize depth, texture, and quiet character. These textiles serve as the starting point, allowing the inherent qualities of the material to shape the direction of each garment. Classic utilitarian references are then filtered through Maki’s perspective and carefully adjusted for modern life. Construction, proportion, and function are reconsidered to create garments that balance practicality with a calm, understated presence. Rather than pursuing novelty, ULTERIOR focuses on pieces that reveal their character over time. Each garment is designed to accompany everyday life — practical, refined clothing that becomes more personal through wear.
